The new modern minimalism, in Fashion

or, why you should forget about cottage core.

Sorry I dead posted my page fashion fanatics. Covid kills the your writing drive. Now that I’m caught back up in the fashion industry, and have worked with the great folks at Fascinate Media and InStyle.com, it’s time to write about what I know best. FASHION!!

Fashion as an industry is changing, or has changed a LOT. We’re talking about a new modern minimalism vibe, mixed with intense bold color choices. Sustainability, upcycling and using deadstock.

About 1-2 years ago, not long after covid hit we need fanciful, easy clothing. Shift dresses, romantic puff sleeves, Laura Ashley farm flower prints were everywhere, even Target.

Cottagecore reigned supreme and we were thrown back into farms of yesteryear which was greeted with a lot of silly memes.

For a brief period in 2021, we hit the hard 2000s, fake looks, plastic surgery extremes, and silver eyeshadow with crop tops.

Thank God designers had enough of that. It then mutated back into a Punk grunge look. Look up Vivian Westwood, and 90s grunge. Think big boots, jeans, and heavy eyeliner.

Let’s talk about what is happening to fast fashion and runways now. Natural minimalism and COLOR!!!

Thom Browne NYC showed us patch of surrealist minimalism.

For the #MetGala Gucci created a dress out of deadstock for Billie Eilish.

Deadstock is material in bolts that have been used and are headed towards a landfill. Great choice Chanel Pre-Cruise Monte Carlo collection showed simple leisure. Red classic Chanel tweed in a smple suit. Classy, chic, comfortable. Perfect for hot summer in the city., and brunch at The Beekman.

Full of a modern vibe. Karolina Zmarlak, a Polish Designer, is bringing us upper eastside New York City minimalism. Outfits have been upcycled and you’d never know it from these clean minimalist looks.

SheIn has become a fast fashion giant. IFYKYK. A side effect of that is that it is heading straight to the landfills. Time to recycle, reoutfit, or alter to keep using. Tired of it, or forgot to return? Sell on Poshmark, or Mercari. We have to be conscious of our clothing.

2022 has been a year of change. Fashion has tossed the frump, for sleek and sexy minimalism. You don’t need throw away your cottagecore dresses. They are perfect for summer outings, but come fall it’s time to get back to looking les farm more charm. Cliché? Yes, and true.

Until our next adventure in couture. Heathyr

Welcome to Forever 21 where the size isn’t right, but we have everything. – Why, Forever 21 is headed towards Bankruptcy

Photo by Ken Nishimura/Los Angeles Times

Originally this was a school project. Checking clothing sizing at a major department store. I moved to a smaller town of about 50,00 people, mostly students a few years ago, so I decided the biggest downtown retailer is Forever 21. My quest for sizing differences was leading me there.

Then I saw the news. Forever 21 is on the verge of bankruptcy. News is reporting they ARE in Chapter 11, but upon further research I found they are currently ALMOST there.

Los Angeles-based Forever 21 is preparing to file for bankruptcy protection as soon as this month, ideally with a restructuring plan in place, the people said. Company advisers have been working on obtaining a bankruptcy loan package that would give the retailer about $75 million to continue operations during the case, Bloomberg previously reported. – LA Times

The real question is, why are they collapsing? The economy is tanking, but their prices are cheap. They seem to be a busy store with a lot of retail goods, making mad sales.  Who hasn’t walked and bought something on impulse? From lip gloss, to hair accessories, underwear, to sportswear, they have it all.

Starting with the window display. I have been drawn in by the items I see. Put together cute outfits and accessories scream, “buy me!”. Once inside the store I can NEVER, EVER find them, or find them in my size. I had to run all the way tot he register to find one employee, who was watching the register, to help me find this dress. Then it was placed far away from the actual item making it hard to find.

Stocking new items on display, an making them easily found is a must for any retailer. We want these things, let us buy them.

The original reason I came in is sizing. This is a project, right? Being a small and petite woman currently is difficult. I don’t have a 32 inseam. Think 26-27. It’s all about clothing sizes.

EBurns and I on Stylers Panel
I’m very tiny and wear a lot of heels ( far right, Styler’s Panel Beverly Hills, 2015)

I’ll let you in on a secret. When sizing your clothes, a size small, to a size medium, goes up 2 inches, by industry standards. This means you size small 2, goes up two inches in waist, shoulder and hips. It also means your could be a size S could be a 0-6, or your medium, 4-10. Also a garment producer can leave up to 2 inches less or more in the trial run, later to be corrected by the designer.

Let’s look at the fit of these items. I tried two size small dresses. One is a lined, dress shirt in, the other tight fitting number I thought was the display dress.

Not the black dress on display, this had a curled hem, the display straight.

The shirt dress is more like a Medium, except in the shoulders. I found the sleeves extra long and the waist for too baggy for any small.

Now here’s something fun to try. Get the shirt you like in two different colors, same size. Try them on? Guess what?!

Forever 21 has actually sized these differently. I found the burgundy shirt fit more comfortably, and the white fit like and extra small. There is the possibility of stretching from trying on, but everything fit he same in the waist, chest and shoulders. One was just smaller. This is an issue of Quality Control. In retail we are generally strict about that.

I’d like to voice my opinion on cleanliness. See the dirt on the dress? Not my camera, not my makeup ,but the floor did that, when I dropped everything. It makes me feel, a slight twinge of germaphobia to go in there.

A lone rubber band, piece of lint and 21 tag mixed with dirt from every human who entered.

Lastly the cashiers. less side-eye please. Your clothes were dirty because of your dressing room, and floor. They fit terribly with bunching and over or under sizing. This customer is buying your ill fitted clothing and paying your wages. I feel your pain, but it’s retail. Considering the hell I just went through, standing in line, and dealing with ill fitting clothes, be nice.

Honestly, I feel more, buy it, try it on at home vibe, then welcome to F21. I did however find a nice brush and hair bands I need in the impulse register area.

I have to thank them for cheap and affordable accessories and make up.

My final opinion is yes, I support them occasionally. In an over all store experience, they have problems. I hope they restructure and come out winning.

Karl Lagerfeld Passes at 85. Je Suis Triste: A Fond Farewell to a Fashion Icon.

Yesterday and today, the fashion world is in mourning. Karl Lagerfeld has died and the industry will never be the same. He was a cornerstone, a foundation, of the industry.

Karl Otto Lagerfeld was a creative director, fashion designer, artist, photographer, who lived in Paris.  Born in 1933 Karl was quick to learn, and branched out as soon as possible. By 1955, after living in Paris for two years, Lagerfeld entered a coat design competition sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat. He won the competition and became quick friends with Yves Saint Laurent, and was then hired by Pierre Balmain. He worked as Pierre Balmain’s assistant, and later apprentice, for three years. (Wikipedia)

Most importantly in the 1980s, when Chanel was antiquated and dying, he took over. He turned it into the multi-billion dollar empire that we know and love today. Insane runways in the Palais in Paris full of rockets, crystals, industrial sites. and models fighting for a change. His collections have met us at the beach and had us walk on water. Never a dull moment his runways were and extension of his personality.

His last show, 2019, Palais de Paris, Haute Couture

With his death may have shared their stories. Models like Naomi Campbell, and Karen Elson, speak warmly of him. Others, say he was a sizist and misogynist. Perhaps, he was a bit of both, he was known to be cruel at times. Karl, however, made a point of saying,

“Everything I say is a joke. I am a joke of myself.”

Karl was indeed a man of great talent. His vision and vast knowledge made and broke careers. He was known for his acerbic wit and sometimes, brutally honest personality.

Karl Lagerfeld, was one thing. Larger than life. He created, made, spoke fashion. He made the industry what we see today. He has left a legacy for us to build upon. Let us hope that we choose to do the right thing with it.

Beyonce and Balmain: A Coachella Love Affair #Beychella #Balmain

beyonces-coachella-balmain-costumes-are-concert-fashion-inspiration-for-every-great-performer

I am DEAD.

For those of us who were unable to attend Coachella this year (shut up, I hate my self too) Beyoncé proved that she IS EVERYTHING. Goddess, artist and fashionista supreme. Working her bey-otiful booty for 3 hours she pretty much swept the floor with all of us. This is the only time I will ever say this: I am shook.

I’m talking fashion. Yes, Beyoncé is amazing. Yes her performance was a once in a lifetime experience, but so was her insanely over the top outfits. I was floored by the amazing, never-ending, insane, over the top outfits by Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain.

Look at this and tell me you are not overwhelmed and want to happy cry.

These designs by the house of Balmain realized are beyond the beyond. The original sketches are surreal and show the work of the talent and imagination of a true artist. Realized, they are exemplary and enduring. Sorry Jay-Z you have competition. Beyonce and Balmain are truly, unforgettable.

Didn’t see Coachella but dying for your daily tidbit. Here is one of the only decent copies of the show circulating at the moment. Watch Beyoncé and Jay-Z kill “Deja-Vu” at Coachella.

Check out that outfit on Queen B. It’s just devastating.

Hollyrod Foundation Design Care 2015 #StylistDiaries #20Models #Charity #AutismAwareness

I’ve ditched all my vices these days in favor of becoming an adrenaline junkie. There is nothing more exhilarating in my life than being thrown into an extreme situation. I live for it. That’swhy when I get offered a 20 model fashion show, I can NEVER say no.

When I was asked to help out with the amazing yearly Hollyrod Foundation Designcare 2015 event to tap a quality designer I said yes. In the past they have worked with fashion superstars such as Naem Khan and Emmauel Ungaro. Finding a fit in Los Angeles would be difficult but not impossible. I have great connections, and know even better designers. I tapped the stunningly talented Adolfo Sanchez and within 24 hours he and the amazing , Holly Peete Robinson and Hollyrod Foundation were working together.

Once you commit and find someone that is high caliber to a charity event this size things get out of control. First you get the designer, than you get tapped to help, than you are the Key Stylist for 20 models, in 20 looks with two personal assistants. The models were gorgeous, the dresses were beautiful, and made me remember why I got in this business 8+ years ago, and the cause was worth working for.

Backstage was small but we managed to get all the girls in their dresses and looking stunning. All the headpieces, crowns, etc were provided by the lovely Fiori Couture. She makes the most magical fantasy pieces of couture you have ever seen.

We even had fresh flowers thanks to @VSanchezFlowers from Orange county.

Believe it or not this hot mess turns into the most beautiful, and well coordinated show you have ever seen. This is what we managed.

Overall this was a fantastic event to be part of. I got to be head/Key Stylist, had amazing assistants and co-workers .

HUGE thanks to Traci May Wagner for taking over backstage, she is an OG industry professional who works around the world and I was lucky to have her.

Taye Diggs as #Hedwig on Broadway

Hedwig and the Angry Itch is one of my all time top 10 movies I love, adore and sing along to like a truly skilled shower singer. This means I have a crap voice but LOVE everything to do with this movie so I will make you suffer anyway. This also means if you haven’t watched it, straight or part of our lovely LGBT community, you should.

It in fact is so good it has become a sold out show on Broadway. Even more amazing is the new lead Hedwig is our favorite, delicious piece of supermodel chocolate, Taye Diggs. And he’s owning it.

Her is the first press photo of Taye rocking the transvestite, with the angry inch, Hedwig.

Work that ruby glitter Taye! We’re rooting for you to own this production!!

Jennifer Lopez vs Richie the Barber #LA #Locals #ClownBarber #JennyfromtheBlock

Reason 2 million I love LA. Our local weirdos. Dennis Woodruff, Angelyne and a newer local favorite, Richie the Barber!

Part barber, part strange anomaly and all sorts of cool clown, Richie the Barber is a great guy and even better hair stylist. Or so I’ve heard. Talent and a love for all things clown and hair, makes Richie ok in my book. However being the ultra clean, I want all white in my dressing room diva, Jennifer Lopez is, she is not such a fan.

11252008_10206880591112375_73507273296288673_n

Jenny from the really expensive, diamond encrusted block, got sprinkled with a nice glitter bomb by Richie while leaving LAX. Richie apparently did the same to Khloe and Kourtney Kar-trashian in 2014.

I’m all for attacking celebu-trash with glitter, but I kind of like the Lopez. Next time try a little confetti Richie. I am sure there will be less cursing and name calling.

PS to TMZ – calling Richie and idiot is beyond kettle calling pot black. You guys are scum of the earth. He at least is a freaky but nice, and having fun.

Versace New Shirt is Stolen From L.A. Artist KESH x American Apparel Design #KESH #VERSACE #Plagiarism #BadForm

Call it a case of fashion imitating art in the worst way possible. Yesterday artist KESH found out that Versace had been plagiarizing her shirt/art, and selling it for bank to millions at high-priced Selfride’s for an over-priced $650. Turns out it’s a rip-off of an incredibly famous shirt by local L.A. artist KESH that was a collaboration in 2013 that retailed for $50.

KeshxAA
KESH X American Apparel 2013 on left, Versace ‘Medusa’ on right.

Ouch!

KESH had created a line with American Apparel in 2013. Internationally renowned for her collection with American Apparel in 2013, KESH went on tour for her collection with American Apparel, the line that sold out in a matter of weeks, and was a celebrity favorite.

According to publicist Sydney Reising;

The collection was extremely well received and sold out almost instantly as a result of the support ranging from models such as Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn (both were frequently seen in multiple pieces from the collaboration), to musicians like Jessie J and Wiz Khalifa, and K-POP stars 2NE1 and G-Dragon

The capsule was sold in American Apparel flagship stores around the world, from Tokyo to Berlin to New York. The artist traveled the globe to celebrate in stores worldwide with fans as the collection debuted.

This looks like a slam dunk case for artist KESH. Not only are the similarities in product plagiarism but the original AA  x KESH Tee was photographed all over the internet by celebrities wearing it. Celebrities are even coming out in favor of the KESH line by instagramming themselves in the famous shirt.

Look’s like not only is the house of Versace looking at a lawsuit. Artist KESH is just devastated. KESH spoke with New York Magazine’s The Cut earlier today:

“I have always had a deep admiration for Versace. It’s an iconic brand that has stood the test of time. I am deeply disappointed in this. This is not only artwork from a show that took me two years to develop and create. It is not only artwork from a collection that I created for American Apparel to provide something affordable and accessible to supporters of my work. But this is also my face! I can’t understand how something like this could happen.”

Over here at HeathyrWolfe.com we support artists of all kinds but never support liars and cheaters. The house of Versace is fabulous, they don’t need to be stealing from hard-working artists. Why not just hire KESH? KESH is well-known for her work and has been featured in publications including; Elle, Cool Hunting, Vogue, i-D, LA Weekly, and WAD. The artist is known for her loyal fan base that includes Kayne West, Theophilus London, Jeremy Scott, Cara Delevingne, Azealia Banks and Prince.

I’m proud to say this is not slowing KESH down. She’s working on products that include not just visuals but music incorporate as well.

Stylist Diaries – Joy Villa and the Grammys, the Dress Heard Around the World

When people ask what I do I have a wide variety of responses. Writer, Editor, Superhero, fangirl, foodie, luchadora, pretzel vendor, fashionista, oh and that thing I do, Wardrobe Styling and Image Branding.

Sure I like pretty clothes that are nice and Michael Kors and Tom Ford are my heroes. But bring me a dress that is over the top couture insanity and I’m hooked. I want to work with it, love it and stick every client I have in it.

My client and friend Joy Villa is something special. She’s diverse, beautiful, 1000% vegan, a hardcore physically fit songstress. She is something special and her style is off the hook.

JoygettingmakeupdonebyNicholephotobyThorsten
Photo by Thorsten von Overgarrd, Nichole Ray Artistry doing Joy’s Grammy make-up

She called me ecstatic, she was headed to the Grammy’s in a few weeks and needed something as amazing, and over the top as her personality. I hooked her up with Andre Soriano, and magic happened. Joy chose the most amazing, creative thing Andre has ever sent down the runway, the couture cage dress made of snow fencing. AS a stylist I make sure that the dress they choose is the MAIN event, but always have other wardrobe choices for parties and after parties

During the fitting we chose three dresses all of which she wore like a supermodel. Stunning and sensual she wore the first, and sexiest to Jay-Z’s ‘Rocnation’ brunch.

Joy and thorsten pre-rocnation

This dress was skin-tight and Joy looked beautiful while she mingled with celebrities.

But let’s look at what you really came here for, The third and most outrageous was the orange dress that made headlines around the world.

Joy and I had an AMAZING fitting with Andre.

joyandandreatmansion

Up in the hills of Hollywood strange and beautiful things happen. At the fitting I met the beautiful Ruby Roxanne or Ruby Roxanne Designs and Hollywood Dolls.

Her partner in crime is ex-Pussycat Doll Kaya Jones. Her line is just what we needed for Joy to look gorgeous and we added Swarovski drop earrings and this leather and Swarovski bracelet;

With Nichole Ray Artistry on make-up the day of Joy turned out an unforgettable Grammy look.

Love it or hate it Joy Villa rocked it at the Grammy’s and got center stage at the Grammy’s. (And to answer the burning question, yes I put pasties on her and she was not completely nude.)

joyatgrammysredcrpetgetty

Apparently we rocked it because as much as she may have gotten some bad reviews we are trending at 81,000 hits in Asia and are on blogs in the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and all over the Philippines.

I want to say congratulations to my team, Andre Soriano (couture King), Ruby Roxanne Designs (Jewelry is everything), Nichole Ray Artistry (her skin was perfection), Thorsten von Overgarrd (one of the best photogs I have ever met) and especially to Joy Villa for rocking the red caret and her amazing energy the whole time!

Don’t know who Joy Villa is, but want to find out? Check out her Vagabonds video below;

Happy Halloween from HeathyrWolfe.com

Well it’s that time of year again where girls get to dress like sluts, boys wear their ridiculous sense of humor and everyone finds a reason to go get candy (trick or treating) or get adult candy (booze and unmentionables). Yes it’s October and time to unleash your inner crazy without getting arrested.

I have been mad busy with LAFW, which brought more work. This means I am furiously typing up future write ups. But all work and no play is really, really bad. This work thing will not stop me from going out of course. Annnnd it’s supposed to rain tonight but seeing as this is my FAVORITE holiday, rain be damned…..LET’S GO FORTH AND FROLIC!

To all my friends in fans in the US and rest of the world,

HAPPY HALLOWEEN KITTENS! See you out there.

Alexander McQueen SS 2015 Avant Art #SS2015 #Spring #Leather #Flowers #Flourish #WearableArt #McQueen

Sarah Burton has taken the Haus of McQueen and made it a fully functioning palais de genius since McQueen’s unfortunate departure in 2002. Her sense of style, art and the dramatic have become a beautiful beast with a dash of feminine mystique.

alexander-mcqueen-fall-2014-ad-campaign

This season the Haus of McQueen has brought laser cut garments, with an Asian inspired flower design and detailing in leather. With a flourish of kimono like dresses and garments that are reminiscent of the early 40’s, Burton inserts her own twist of the modern with cut out breast petals and dashes of embroidery. Add unique latex mask’s in a stunning representation that is truly, wholly, McQueen wearable art.

Check out the SS 2015 line below.
